Pomona, California - The University of La Verne softball team traveled to Pomona, California for an afternoon SCIAC conference opener with Pomona-Pitzer. Heading into today's game, the Leopards brought in a record of 4-1 while the Sagehens entered the game with a record of 2-5. After one inning of play the Leopards led by a score of 1-0 after a score by Haylee Hsieh. The second inning would see the Leopards score one run but give up four runs to the Sagehens, trailing by a score of four to two after two innings of play. The Leopards scored two runs ( Clarissa Salazar and Erika Garcia ) in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at four apiece. The Leopards rallied four runs in seventh inning to give them an 8-4 victory and a 1-0 record in SCIAC play. Head coach Dennis Belas was extremely pleased with the play of his team. "It was a great team win in our conference opener. Pomona Pitzer is a tough team and we stuck to the plan. We had some clutch hits from Taylor Gray to tie the game and we had a big pinch-hit homerun from Julie Contreras in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead. Rachel Rubio had another great outing in the circle. It was a great team win, everybody came in and did their job when they were called upon. It's a Great day to be Leo!" The Leopards return to action tomorrow for a double header against Pomona-Pitzer. The games will be played at 12:00pm and 2:00pm at Leopard Stadium.
