LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne women's soccer team created a handful of dangerous opportunities in the second half but could not translate them into goals in a 2-0 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

La Verne falls to 3-12-0 overall and 2-9-0 in the SCIAC. CMS improves to 11-5-1 and 8-2-1.

Laynee Laube got the Athenas on the board in the 24th minute and it turned out to be enough. Laube was released with a pass over the top, eluded a couple of defenders and got off an off balance shot that Hanien Samara got a piece of. But the ball hit the right post, rolled across the goal to the left post and deflected in.

After being outshot, 11-2, and allowing the opening goal, La Verne came out of the break with a renewed purpose and dominated the play in the second half. The Leopards attacked CMS defense from all angles and got into the attacking third with ease but just could not find the finishing move.

The Leopards really put on the pressure in the middle of the half as they drew four corner kicks and launched four shots in a span of 10 minutes. But the Athenas seemed to get a piece of almost every shot and pass in and around the box and weathered the storm.

With the Leopards pushing up late, Katelyn Faust scored the insurance marker in the 82nd minute for the Athenas.

Samara started the first game of her collegiate career and made six saves in one half of action.

The Leopards are back in action on Saturday at Cal Lutheran.
