LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne football team could not overcome a slow start and lost, 49-14, to Redlands on Saturday afternoon at Ortmayer Stadium.

La Verne falls to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the SCIAC. Redlands improves to 3-1 and 2-0.

The Bulldogs blitzed the Leopards out of the gates, scoring the game's first 22 points.

La Verne's offense showed signs of life in the second quarter. Josh Evans found Alex Arellano on a short route and Arellano took it to the house for a 58-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 22-7. After forcing the Bulldogs to a three-and-out, the Leopards went to the ground on their next drive. La Verne rushed nine times without attempting a pass and Robert Fernandez finished the drive off with a 1-yard score to get the Leopards within one possession.

But the offense stalled in the second half and it was all Redlands from there as the Bulldogs shut the Leopards out, 27-0, in the half. Mitch Kidd led an 85-yard touchdown drive in the Bulldogs' first possesion of the second half and took a quarterback keeper for a 30-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs up, 36-14. Alex Raya added two field goals and Jacob Guglielmana had a 26-yard rushing touchdown.

Evans finished the day with 115 passing yards and a touchdown. Zachary Tomlinson took the snaps in the second half and he finished 10-of-18 with 89 yards.

Arellano was the recipient of nine of the passes and racked up 127 receving yards.

Fernandez led La Verne's ground attack with 73 yards on 15 carries.

Austin Brown was a terror on the interior of the defense. Brown collected 14 total tackles including a sack. Derrin Hooks had eight tackles and a force fumble. Alexander Martinez notched seven tackles and a sack.

Tyler Shreve and Kidd took turns under center for Redlands. Kidd went 9-for-12 for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Shreve completed 7-of-14 passes for 101 yards.

Andrighetto led Redlands with 74 rushing yards and Cole Blackburn led the receving corps with 147 receiving yards.

The Leopards are back in action next Saturday at home against Occidental.
