ORANGE, Calif. — Chapman took away the La Verne football team's biggest strength to beat the Leopards, 30-7, on Saturday night at Ernie Chapman Stadium.

La Verne, who had the nation's ninth best rushing offense with 299.2 yards per game heading into the matchup, was held to just 40 yards on 35 carries as Chapman stacked the box throughout the game. Zachary Tomlinson and Josh Evans combined to throw for 184 yards for the Leopards but could not make enough plays to make up for the loss of the rushing output.

La Verne falls to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the SCIAC. Chapman improves to 3-3 and 2-2.

Chapman quarterback Ricky Bautista opened the scoring with a 37-yard scamper on the game's third play from scrimmage and led a 14-play field goal drive on the Panthers' second possession as the Panthers took a 10-0 lead.

La Verne caught the Panthers off-guard on its ensuing possession as running back Dallas Parent found quarterback Evans for a 27-yard pass and completed another pass to Sebastian Kirchfeld that went for 31 yards. Parent then finished the drive with a 1-yard run to get the Leopards within 10-7.

But that was all La Verne would get as the Leopards committed two turnovers in the red zone and the Panthers defense held the Leopards to 2-for-11 on third down conversion attempts and 2-for-6 on fourth downs.

Kirchfeld had a career day, hauling in five passes for 93 yards. Alex Arellano caught seven for 66.

Parent finished with 37 yards rushing and Robert Fernandez had 23.

Austin Brown, who missed most of last week's game against Occidental, came back in full force to make eight tackles including a sack and three for loss.

Israel Macias notched two sacks and had three tackles for a total loss of 20 yards.

Bautista finished the day 16-of-25 passing for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Jacob Isabel and Ethan Weinstein were on the receiving end of the scores.

The Leopards will go back on the road next Saturday as they travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
