La Verne Men's Basketball Rallies to Beat Cal Lu in OT

LA VERNE – Ronn See took over in overtime, Evan Roberts had 12 points off the bench and the University of La Verne men's basketball team clawed back from an eight-point second half deficit to beat Cal Lutheran 80-76 for its second straight overtime victory on Saturday night at Franz Athletic Court.

With the win, La Verne (9-12, 6-6 SCIAC) takes sole possession of fourth place in the SCIAC standings. Cal Lutheran falls to 17-5 overall and 8-5 in SCIAC play. The Kingsmen remain third place.

"Our guys are really bought into the brotherhood," La Verne head coach Richard Reed said. "We trust different guys to step up every night."

After a relatively quiet regulation in terms of scoring, See scored five of La Verne's six points in overtime to finish with 14 points. The senior guard also dished out 11 assists and did not commit a single turnover.

Collin Knudsen got the Cal Lutheran on the board first in overtime with a short jumper, but that was all the Kingsmen would get the rest of the way.

See responded by hitting a layup and earning a trip to the charity stripe to give the Leopards its first lead since the 12:41 mark in the first half.  Then the 6-foot guard hit a midrange jumper with 17 seconds left in the game to give the Leopards a 79-76 cushion.

Cal Lutheran couldn't convert on ensuing possessions and La Verne was able to hold on for the victory.

The Leopards were down by eight points with about 6 minutes left in regulation after the Kingsmen had gone on a quick 8-0 run in the preceding two minutes to open up a 65-57 lead.

But the Leopards battled back with everyone contributing. Weston Newell scored five points in five minutes, Niall Harrison made key plays and Josiah Sukumaran grabbed a huge offensive rebound off a missed free throw and put it back up to bring the Leopards within one with 38 seconds left.

"Everybody knows the value of everyone," Reed said. "So in certain situations, guys are looking for other guys to make plays.

"That's really important for us as we move forward."

See then finally tied the game at 74-74 with a couple of free throws with 10 seconds left in the half and the game went to over time after Cal Lutheran's Arik Smith missed the buzzer beater.

Harrison finished with a quiet 19 points and tied the game-high with eight rebounds. Newell chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds.

Roberts was efficient with his shots and minutes. The freshman scored his 12 points on just six shots in 17 minutes of play.

Cal Lutheran's Arik Smith had a game-high 20 points.

La Verne returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Whitter (10-9, 4-6 SCIAC) for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
