Spencer leads Men’s Golf at Coyote Classic

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Alec Spencer shot a three-round score of 225 to place 24th overall and lead the University of La Verne men's golf team at the Coyote Classic on Monday and Tuesday at Arrowhead Country Club.

The Leopards were up against top Division II competition and the only other Division III team in the field was SCIAC rival Redlands, who finished eighth.

The La Verne junior shot a four-over 76 in the opening round and carded a five-over 77 in the second round before finding his groove in the final round, where he hit an even-par 72.

Austin Matzaganian posted a team-low first round score of three-over 75 and came in with a 77 in the second round. He wrapped up the tournament with a four-over 76 on Tuesday and finished 34th overall.

Hisham Hussein finish tied for 49th with a score of 233 (78-79-76) and Kwangyun Yi rounded out La Verne's scoring lineup with a total of 238 (80-80-78).

Josh Davis and Sam Mangiaterra fared well as individuals. Davis, after posting a nine-over 81 in the first round, went 73-72 in the final two rounds to finish tied for 28th overall. Mangiaterra tied for 46th with a score of 232 (76-80-76).

The Leopards return to action on March 18-20 at the prestigious Jekyll Island Invitational in Georgia.
