Michael Ordona Breaks SCIAC Championship Record

VENTURA, CA - This past weekend the Leopards competed in the 2023 SCIAC Men's Golf championship at Olivas Links Golf Course in Ventura, CA.

The Leopards were represented by the men's individual SCIAC Conference Champion Michael Ordona, senior Kyle Hazlett, sophomore Connor Askey, and freshmen Sheehan Kumakesh and Jason Bustos. After a turbulent start with +13 on round one, the Leos were able put together two great rounds, going back to back below par. During the second round the Leos shot -1, and round three saw them at -2, for a total of +11 for the event. The scores placed the TEAM 5th in this year's SCIAC championship.

After 7 rounds of golf, our men's golf team finished the conference tournament in 4th place with a total score of 2,643 - just behind CMS, PP and Redlands.

After winning SCIAC #2 Ordona became the top individual medalist at this year's Championship with a tournament record of -12, shooting 204, including an event low tying -6 during the third round. Ordona was 10 under par during his final 27 holes and played 29 holes at par or better. "I am immensely grateful for this team and extremely happy I get to finish my college career shooting a personal best. Proud to be a Leo and representing my school the best way I can," Ordana said.

The La Verne freshmen finished +5, making the top 20th best score of the event. Our Hazlett had five birdies in his last round to redeem himself and close the event with a 231, total followed by Askey at +16.

Coach Nathalie Silva summed up the tournament saying, "This event was full of emotions, we did not have a good start but the TEAM stayed positive out there. I am really proud of what we have accomplished, we left no stones unturned. It was exciting to see Michael [Ordona] play well, he worked so hard during the season and was patiently waiting for this moment. It came, and he deserves it all. Sad to see him and Kyle depart, but definitely excited for what the future holds for them."
