Men's Water Polo drops two on final day of Gary Troyer Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's water polo team dropped to Whittier and Loyola Marymount on the final day of the 2016 Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday at Axelrod Pool.

Whittier 13, La Verne 9

The Leopards hung tough against the perennial SCIAC contender but a slow start and inefficient power play proved the difference.

Guillermo Ocasio scored the opening goal for the Leopards but the Poets scored four in a row to grab a 4-1 edge and held on the rest of the way.

Jared Hopley and Rex Sample scored back-to-back goals to open the second quarter, getting the Leopards within a goal, but that was as close as it would get.

The Leopards had 11 man-up chances but converted only three of them.

Ocasio and Rey Julian Castillo led the Leopards with three goals apiece. Hopley finished with two and Sample finished with one.

Wedge Molthen was the top scorer for the Poets with three goals and Aidan Tol and Emilio Maldonado each had two.

Loyola Marymount 19, La Verne 8

Playing the Lions for the second time in as many weeks, the Leopards more than doubled their goal output from last Saturday.

But it wasn't nearly enough to topple the NCAA Division I opponent.

La Verne once again got on the board first, this time on a goal by Castillo. But the Lions scored the next three goals to take the lead and never looked back, outscoring the Leopards in every quarter.

Castillo notched another hat trick to lead the Leopards in scoring. Josh Vega finished with two and Ocasio, Jesse Iniquez and Sample each scored one.

Alex Athimaritis led all players with five goals.
