George steps down as cross country head coach

LA VERNE, Calif. — Bryan George announced he will step down as head coach of the University of La Verne men's and women's cross country teams.

George, who also coached middle distance and long distance runners for the La Verne track and field teams, led the Leopards cross country program for five seasons and served as the interim track and field head coach for the 2016-17 season.

"We are grateful for Bryan's commitment to the University of La Verne community and athletic department over the last five seasons," said Interim Director of Athletics Scott Winterburn. "His leadership helped guide the men's and women's cross country teams to success both athletically and academically. We wish Bryan much success in his future endeavors."

In 2013, George led the men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA West Region Championships and over the course of five seasons guided several athletes to all-region recognition including Melissa Cerrillos this past season.

He also mentored Lenore Moreno '14 to a pair of national championships in track and field in 2014. After winning the indoor 5,000 meters and setting a meet record at the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships, Moreno won the 10,000 meters at the outdoor championship meet to claim the first La Verne women's individual championship since 1997.

The cross country squads also excelled in the classroom with George at the helm as both teams received multiple USATFCCCA all-academic recognitions.

The University of La Verne will launch a national search to find the program's next head coach.
