CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne men's cross country team opened the year Saturday morning at Pomona College against No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental College, ranked fourth regionally.
After a successful freshman season last year, Matthew Salas led the Leopards in Saturday's race, taking 11th overall with a time of 19:58. Marcelo Arcos was La Verne's number two runner, clocking in at 20:43.
From the Coach: "Today was a solid opener for the men's team. They have been working really hard over the last few weeks and despite some fatigue, they competed well against two really strong teams. I'm excited to see what they can accomplish in our upcoming meets."
Samuel Johnny followed right behind with the senior crossing the finish line at 20:50. Jeremiah Alarcon was the fourth finisher for La Verne, posting a time of 21:30.
Eric Lopez-Elwell (21:51), Kyle Regret (21:57), and Aidan Garcia (22:20) finished off the race for La Verne.
Next Race: The Leopards next compete at the Biola Invitational next Saturday, September 8 at 8 a.m. The race will be held at Ted Craig Regional Park in Fullerton.
