Relays highlight Day Two of Collegiate Winter Invitational

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams continued to display good results on the second day of Collegiate Winter Invitational at East Los Angeles College.

Relays highlighted the day for the Leopards as the men's and the women's 200 yard medley relays and 800 freestyle relays all finished in top-8. The women's medley relay team of Mary Hanna, Rachel Fox, Krislyn Cha kicked off the evening finals with an eighth-place finish with a time of 1:54.31. The men's medley squad of CJ Woodward, Harry Bennett, Joey Sabers and Timothy Polman touched second with a time of 1:35.42.

Fox, Miranda Chavez, Hanna and Cha finished sixth in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 8:17.79 and the men's quartet of Bennett, Polman, Brandon Pon and Daniel Carpenter posted a 7:15.09 to finish fifth.

Men's Competition

Carpenter notched La Verne's lone individual win of the day in his signature 200 freestyle. The senior went 1:45.04 in the morning prelims to earn the top seed and held it in the final, going 1:45.00.

Sabers emerged as a surprise in butterfly. The freshman, who wrapped up his debut water polo season just two weeks ago, posted a time of 52.10 in the 100 butterfly and finished fifth. He also recorded the third-fastest butterfly split (22.89) in the 200 medley relay.

Bennett finished third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.60.

Women's Competition

Fox finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.86. Chavez was in the consolation final of the event and finished 13th overall at 1:10.18.

Cha earned points in the grueling 400 individual medley, finishing 14th with a time of 4:58.32. Mary Hanna touched at 1:00.38 in the 100 backstroke to finish 12th.
