Cerrillos leads Women’s Cross Country at SCIAC Multi-Dual

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Melissa Cerrillos placed 18th overall individually to lead the University of La Verne women's cross country team at SCIAC Multi-Dual on Saturday morning at La Mirada Regional Park.

Cerrillos, who was battling sickness all week, crossed the finish line in 23 minutes, 21.32 seconds. The sophomore, who really came on towards the end of last season and in the track and field season, has led the women's team in three of four meets this year.

"I was coming off an injury and a sickness and I also fell in my race but I feel, overall, I did really good and set a personal record for this course," Cerrillos said. "I'm really excited for what the rest of the season has in store for both [men's and women's] teams."

Kamalei Lee was La Verne's second best in 59th with a time of 24:54.28.

Courtney Oberholtz finished 100th (28:20.79), Jesja Pham was 101st (28:31.46) and Daisy Perez came in 108th (29:53.86) to round out La Verne's scorers.

Pomona-Pitzer's Maya Weigel won the 6k race at 21:04.84.

"This was a good opportunity to see where we are at the halfway point in the season," La Verne head coach Bryan George said. "We're focused on peaking for the championship meets in late October and November. We've got some work to do in the interim."

The Leopards are back in action on Oct. 15 at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
