Women's Cross Country Competes at Pomona-Pitzer Invite

CLAREMONT, CA — Ashley Garnica paced the Leopards, Catherina Posada and Mackenzie Lazarus followed close behind, and the University of La Verne women's cross country team turned in a solid performance at the competitive Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday.

Garnica, who in her junior season has shown much improvement, finished first for La Verne, closing out with a time of 24:38.3.

Posada and Lazarus followed in close succession. Posada crossed finished with a time of 25:01.0 with Lazarus immediately crossing the line next at 25:01.9.

Reiko Fujimoto stepped up for the Leopards, finishing fourth for her squad with a time of 25:19.6. Junior Michelle Suarez ended with a time of 25:39.9.

Jesja Pham (26:37.) Serena Gallegos (26:39.9, and Isabella Powers (27:12.2)  closed out the race for La Verne.

"The women did a great job of getting out strong and closing their spread throughout the later stages of the race," said La Verne Cross Country Head Coach Justin Wood. "Reiko stepped up into a scoring role after one of our top-three had to drop out and that was a good sign of this team's mentality. Now, we go into a three-week training cycle before our conference championships."

Next Race

The Leopards take a couple of weeks off of competition before heading into the SCIAC Championships on November 2.
