Leopards Edged in Season Finale

ORANGE, CA — The University of La Verne baseball team battled Cal Lutheran in an elimination game Saturday in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

But the Leopards couldn't generate enough offense and the Kingsmen scored the go-ahead run in the ninth to beat La Verne 3-2.

Tied 2-2 in the top of the ninth, Cal Lutheran's Ben Wangrin led off with a double and advanced to third on an error. Two batters later, Harrison Dunkel singled in the runner to put Cal Lutheran ahead by one.

La Verne had a chance to respond in the bottom of the inning but couldn't get any runners on base.

Adam Santa Cruz gave La Verne the opening lead of the game in the fourth when he plated Brandon Shiota with a sacrifice fly to left field.

After the Kingsmen took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, Anthony Salcedo got things going for La Verne in the eighth when he led off with a double down the left field line. Christian Killian stepped in to pinch hit and put the ball into play. The Leopard stook advantage of a Cal Lutheran error that sent Salcedo home to tie the game. Salcedo finished the game with two doubles.

Gerald Terry pitched six innings in his start striking out a season-high seven batters. Alfredo Frey pitched a pair of innings and Nick Zolferino stepped onto the mound in the ninth, striking out three.

Shiota, Cameron Slessor, and Aaron Fong each finished with a hit.

The Leopards finish the shortened season 5-7. Cal Lutheran improves to 9-10.
