Lutes Over Leopards in Home Opener

Nate Rodriguez, Sports Information Intern

The Leopards struggled to find their offensive flow, falling behind early to the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes and dropping the home opener at Ortmayer Stadium 41-0.

After traveling to Tacoma, Washington and losing early during last season, the Leopards hosted the Lutes for their home opener this season in hopes to turn the tide. Once Pacific Lutheran forced a ULV turnover on downs and scored on their first drive, the Lutes kept their foot on the gas.

Rocco Tate hauled in a 34-yard catch on La Verne's opening drive for the longest catch of the night, but the Leopards struggled to find a rhythm behind quarterback Miguel Aguero Jr. Aguero completed half of his pass attempts on the night, finishing with a 10-20 performance good for 101 yards. In the third quarter, sophomore quarterback Andre Maldonado subbed in and completed three of his five passes for 25 yards. Wideout Spencer Pool led the team in catches with five, spanning 58 total yards of offense for the Leos. Jacob Fimbres had five carries for 16 yards, and Kyle Bandy had seven touches for 14 yards.

The Leopards have one final preseason tune-up before conference play begins; La Verne will travel to the city of Orange to go head-to-head against the Chapman Panthers on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 pm.
