CHINO HILLS, Calif. — The No. 22 La Verne men's golf team stumbled out of the gate in the second round of the 2017 SCIAC Championships on Monday but finished strong to retain its overall lead.

The Leopards shot 299 as a team and dropped into a tie for second place with Redlands for the tournament. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps shot 291 on the day to shoot to the top but the Leopards remain four strokes ahead in the overall standings, which should make for a thrilling final round on Tuesday.

Conner Davis shot a 2-over 74 for La Verne's second low score of the day.

Alec Spencer was 1-under after front nine but struggled in the second half to finish at 4-over 76 on the day. Austin Matzaganian also came in with a 4-over 76 to round out La Verne's scoring.

Hisham Hussein came into the clubhouse with a 5-over 77. Aaron DiGiamarino was 6-over after the first nine holes but sank two birdies on the back nine and finished with a 79.
