Spencer earns qualification to NCAA Division III National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS — Alec Spencer of the La Verne men's golf team has been selected to participate in the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championshps, the NCAA selection committee announced on Monday.

The senior from San Diego claims one of just five individual berths. The top individuals are selected from a pool of players who have not qualified with a team.

Spencer is not new to the national stage. He was in the 5-man lineup for the Leopards at the 2014 and 2015 national championships and has competed at numerous high-level tournaments throughout the country over the years. He finished 31st individually at the 2014 national championships and 50th in 2015.

Spencer ranks 37th in the nation with an average score of 73.67 per round this year and played consistent golf as he has done throughout his career. He finished tied for 35th against a national championship-caliber field at Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational and finished sixth at West Cup, the premier Division III tournament west of the Mississippi. He ended the regular season with a fourth place finish at the SCIAC Championships.

Spencer is a four-time All-SCIAC selection and was the 2014 Ken Sherman SCIAC Freshman of the Year. He was named PING All-West Region Team and a Jack Nicklaus Award semifinalist in 2016.

The championships, which will be held from May 16-19 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, will be hosted by Oglethorpe University and Central Florida Sports Commission.
