Gonzalez, Uribe lift Men's Soccer past Cal Lutheran, 2-1

LA VERNE, Calif. — Nathan Gonzalez's stunning free kick and a Saul Uribe header saw La Verne men's soccer to a 2-1 win on Wednesday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

The Leopards did not show any signs of a hangover coming off a 10-0 rout of St. Katherine on Sunday as Gonzalez and Uribe delivered a stand-out performance.

Gonzalez earned the free kick after he received a headed pass from Uribe just inches outside the box in the 22nd minute. Gonzalez then bended a perfect shot over the Cal Lutheran wall and just over the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper to put the Leopards on the board.

The Leopards kept their foot on the gas after the goal, getting off five more shots before the half and creating dangerous opportunities after the second half kick off.

As the Leopards kept up the pressure, Cal Lutheran made a panicked back line clearance that landed right at Gonzalez's feet on the left wing 10 minutes into the second half.

Gonzalez calmly collected the ball and played a lob pass from a difficult angle to Uribe, who found a pocket of space in front of the near-post and launched a diving header that found the back of the net to give the Leopards a commanding 2-0 lead.

Gonzalez created at least two more opportunities to extend La Verne's lead. In the 77th minute, he flashed his individual skills to get past two defenders into the box but had a shot blocked. In the closing seconds of the game, he got behind Cal Lutheran's defense for a 1-on-1 chance, but Cal Lutheran's goalie came off the line at the last minute to make the save.

The Kingsmen played with more urgency after the Leopards' second score and pounced on a La Verne mistake in the back to pull one back. Zack Larson stole a sloppy pass in Cal Lutheran's attacking third, got past the goalkeeper and put it into an empty net to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 83rd minute.

Cal Lutheran managed to get into dangerous areas after its goal, but the Leopards made a tackle after clutch tackle to hold off the Kingsmen.

The Leopards controlled the play for most of the game. The Kingsmen got off 10 shots but they only forced one save from La Verne goalkeeper Josh Ramirez. La Verne attempted 16 shots and outdrew Cal Lutheran, 6-2, in corner kicks.

The Leopards return to action against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday night at Ortmayer Stadium. The kickoff is at 7 p.m.
