PASADENA — Nathan Gonzalez and Saul Uribe put away two early goals to give the University of La Verne men's soccer team a 3-1 win over Caltech on Wednesday afternoon at North Field.

The Leopards improve to 9-2-0 overall and 6-2-0 in SCIAC play to remain in first place in the league standings. Caltech falls to 0-7-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the SCIAC.

Uribe had a hand in the first two goals. In the sixth minute, he whipped in a good cross from right to Nathan Gonzalez, who trapped it on the edge of the six-yard box and slotted it into the net to open the scoring.

Uribe then scored himself in the 15th minute on a good give-and-go with Ferdinand Estrada. Estrada slipped a through ball to Uribe, who found a pocket of space on the right side of the penalty box. Uribe then made a quick cut to his left and rattled a shot into the net off the bottom of the cross bar.

La Verne dominated the possession the rest of the half and just missed out on increasing the lead further on multiple occasions as it picked its spots on offense. The defense completely shut down the Beavers' attack and did not give up a meaningful shot the entire half. The Leopards outshot the Beavers, 13-1, in the first half.

Caltech then completely turned it around and put all kinds of pressure on the Leopards early in the second half. After a sustained early pressure, Adam Ball finally pulled one back in the 60th minute as he full-volleyed a corner kick from the top of the penalty box and drilled it into the top of the goal.

The Beavers registered the first five shots of the half—all within the first 10 minutes—and drew three corner kicks corner kicks before its goal.

The Leopards gathered themselves back and grabbed an insurance goal on a Caltech own goal in the 86th minute. Anton Russell forced a save from Caltech goalkeeper JD Feist, but Feist could not collect the rebound and the ball crossed the goal line off Valentin Skoutnev in the ensuing scrum.

La Verne will get seven-day break from SCIAC competition and will return to action on Saturday when it hosts UC Santa Cruz. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
