Men’s Water Polo Picks Up Three Wins at Gary Troyer Convergence

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's water polo team continued its strong start to the season at the annual Gary Troyer Convergence, picking up three wins during the weekend.

Game 1: La Verne 19, Penn St.-Behrend 6

La Verne scored the game's first 10 goals and thoroughly dominated the entire match.

When Penn St.-Behrend's Matthew Johnson stopped the bleeding for the Lions with a goal midway through the second quarter, the Leopards responded with a big 7-0 run to put the game away

Jonathon Jarvis had a match-high five goals and Troy Williams, Bryan Jimenez, Matthew Vega and Andrew Phillips and two goals apiece.

Game 2: MIT 15, La Verne 7

The offense was too slow to get going for La Verne in a 15-7 loss to MIT.

The Engineers scored the game's first three goals and the Leopards cut the lead to 3-2 after scoring the final goal in the first quarter and the opener in the second. But the Leopards couldn't continue the momentum and the Engineers went on a 5-0 run to take an 8-2 lead into the break.

Josh Vega and Andrew Phillips scored the first two goals of the second half to get La Verne within 8-4, but that was as close as the Leopards would get. MIT outscored La Verne 7-3 the rest of the way to seal the win.

Game 3: La Verne 17, Gannon 13

Bryan Jimenez scored five goals and two other Leopards notched hat tricks as La Verne beat Gannon, 17-13.

The third quarter was the difference. The Leopards took a slim 9-8 lead into halftime and came out of the break on fire. Jared Hopley opened the second half scoring and Troy Williams got on the board to make it 11-9 La Verne. Gannon's Nick Williams responded to get Gannon within a goal, but that's when La Verne made its move.

The Leopards went on a 4-0 run on goals by Williams, Jimenez, Josh Vega and Andrew Phillips to give La Verne some cushion.

The run, combined with a strong defense that limited the Golden Knights to four goals in the second, was enough to secure the win for La Verne.

Game 4: La Verne 8, Fordham 6

La Verne blanked Division I Fordham in two of four quarters to come away with an 8-6 victory.

The Leopards started each half strongly, scoring three goals while shutting out the Rams in the first and third quarters.

Fordham did put up four goals in the second quarter to make it 4-4 going into the break. But La Verne regrouped and Troy Williams, Bryan Jimenez and Viken Huening scored three unanswered goals in the third to give the Leopards a 7-4 cushion.

The Leopards will enjoy a 14-day break before starting SCIAC action against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Oct. 18.
