Softball Splits Doubleheader at CMS

CLAREMONT – Behind Lindsay Godwin's strong performance in the circle in Game 2, the University of La Verne softball team earned a doubleheader split against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at the Athena Field on Saturday afternoon

Game 1: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2, La Verne 0

La Verne pitchers allowed just two runs on six hits, but the Leopard offense could not string together enough hits against CMS' Hayley Schultz as they fell short, 2-0, in Game 1.

After CMS loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 3rd, La Verne starter Godwin walked two batters and hit another that allowed two runs to cross the plate, which turned out to be the game-winning difference.

La Verne had a decent shot to put one on the board in their half of the 3rd inning. Laura Olson and Danielle Vela both singled up the middle with one out to set the table for Breeanna De La Rosa and Raven Freret, but neither was able to drive one in.

Rachel Hong came on in relief in the 3rd inning and scored 3.2 scoreless innings while striking out two.

Freret was 2 for 3. Vela, Duran and Olson each had one hit.

Schultz scattered five hits and struck out four in a shutout.

Brooklyn Robinson of CMS was 4 for 4.

Game 2: La Verne 5, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1

The offense came up with timely hits and Godwin turned around to fire a complete game as La Verne won, 5-1, in Game 2.

Godwin gave up five hits and five walks, but showed her ability to get out of jams time and time again. In the 1st inning, the sophomore gave up a walk and a single to start the inning, but put down the next three batters in a row to escape early trouble. She got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 3rd and wiggled out of two runners-on situations in five of seven innings.

The one run she allowed in the 7th was an unearned kind. Leadoff hitter Shannon O'Neill reached on an error and CMS scored on a Katie Savard RBI single after two outs had ben made.

The Leopards opened the scoring in the 2nd when they took advantage of two fielding errors by the Athenas to go up 2-0.

The offense stalled in the middle innings, but the Leopards gave themselves much-needed breathing room in the 7th when they put together three runs on three hits. After Olson led off with a single and was sacrificed over to second, De La Rosa singled to center to plate Olson. Freret followed with a single and Duran smacked a double to deep left center to drive in both De La Rosa and Hayley Jacquess, who was running for Freret.

The Leopards return to action on March 14 when they travel to Whittier for a doubleheader. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
