Women's Golf faces top competition at Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. — The La Verne women's golf team got their first taste of championship-level competition at the annual Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Oglethorpe, on March 17-19.

It was La Verne's first-ever trip to the premier Division III tournament, which invites national championship caliber field every year. The field featured 10 of the top 20 teams in the Golfstat Relative Ranking, including the defending national champion Rhodes.

Kirsten Contreras led the way for the Leopards. The junior shot a 90 in the first round, bounced back with an 85 in the second and came into the clubhouse on the final day with an 88 to finish with a total of 263 and finished tied for 84th overall.

Morgan Malloy shot 96 in each of the first two rounds but cut six strokes in the final round to finish with a total of 282. She finished 111th overall.

Valerie Lopez rounded out La Verne's lineup with a total score of 306 (104-100-102) and finished 116th overall.

The Leopards are back in action on March 27-28 at OGIO Bulldog Classic at Indian Springs Country Club in La Quinta, California.
