PASADENA — The University of La Verne volleyball team picked up its first SCIAC win of the season by sweepeing Caltech, 25-8, 25-11, 25-22, on Thursday night at Braun Athletic Center.

La Verne improves to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play. Caltech falls to 0-6 and 0-2.

The Leopards got contribution from up and down the roster. All-American Brittany Yaxley paced all players with 12 kills, freshman Danielle Ridewood dished out a match-high 10 assists in her first extended action and Monica Lopez had a game-high 13 digs.

The Leopards blitzed the Beavers out of the gate, starting the match on a 12-1 run led by Destinee Sales' four kills. The Beavers stemmed the bleeding with a 3-0 run but it wasn't nearly enough wrestle the momentum from the Leopards.

The second set started out much more closely but La Verne ripped off an 11-0 run to grab a 20-7 set lead and never looked back. Sarah Yauchzee registered two service aces and Delaney Lynch put down three kills during the run.

The Leopards hit .328 as a team through the first two sets but faltered a bit in a close final set. La Verne looked to be cruising on its way to winning the final set as it started on 5-0 run but committed six errors in a row to cede the lead to the Beavers for the first time. Caltech then took advantage of more La Verne errors mixed with good hitting to grab a 21-18 lead late in the set.

But a Caltech service error was all the Leopards needed to flip their switch. After a Subhadra Vetrivel's serve fell short, Yaxley knocked down three straight kills to get the lead back to La Verne and Cassie Thompson finished the match off three points later.

Lynch had seven kills to go along with 10 digs and Sales also recorded seven kills.

Catherine Jamshidi led the Beavers with six kills and seven digs.

The Leopards will have a quick turnaround as they host Whitter tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Sports Science and Athletics Pavilion.
