Swimming and Diving falls to Pomona-Pitzer in true dual

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams recorded good individual results against the national powerhouse squads of Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at Haldeman Pool.

The men claimed four individual events. Timothy Polman kept his freestyle sprint winning streak alive, taking the men's 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.97 seconds. Brandon Pon won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:04.10. Andrew Tompkins won both diving events, taking the 3-meter with a total score of 270.38 and the 1-meter with a score of 266.78.

The most exciting race came at the end of the meet, in which Pomona-Pitzer and La Venre exchanged leads before the Sagehens pulled away late with a pool-record time of 1:25.78 in the 200 freestyle relay. La Verne's quartet of Polman, CJ Woodward, Joey Sabers and Daniel Carpenter posted a time of 1:27.09, a season best.

Miranda Chavez led the way for the women against the defending SCIAC champions. The senior notched La Verne's lone win in the women's competition, claiming the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.15. Pomona-Pitzer's Erin Bigus was a touch faster at 50 yards but Chavez went 36.83 in the last 50 to edge Bigus by six one-hundredths of a second. Chavez finished second in the 200 breaststroke behind Bigus.

Chavez also swam the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay with Mary Hanna, Kayla Yip and Rachel Fox that finished third with a time of 1:54.21.

Rachel Miyoga joined Hanna, Yip and Fox in the 200 freestyle relay and La Verne touched second at 1:42.70.

Yip posted a pair of second place finishes in the butterfly events and a couple more as a part of relay teams. The sophomore went 2:18.49 in the 200 and 1:01.32 in the 100. The Sagehens' Sabrina Kwan won both races at 2:11.73 and 59.70, respectively. She swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay and the second leg of the 200 freestyle relay.

Rachel Fox finished with four top-3 finishes and showcased her versatility. The sophomore finished third in the 100 breastroke (1:10.97) and second in the 500 freestyle (5:21.10) while swimming the anchor legs of the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

Amber DeLoye finished second in both diving events. She scored 188.78 points on the 1-meter board and 183.90 on the 3-meter. Sara Bartelt finished third on the 3-meter with a score of 144.45.

The Leopards travel to Caltech next Saturday for the final dual meet of the season before the SCIAC Championships Feb. 15-18.
