LA VERNE, Calif. — La Verne post Emily Myers hit a layup with 2:59 to play in the first quarter against Occidental on Saturday afternoon to become the 10th player in La Verne women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point mark.

And the Leopards made sure the occasion was celebrated in a winning fashion, defeating the Tigers, 73-64, at Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion.

Myers finished the game with eight points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two assists.

The Leopards jumped out to a big early lead as they took a 16-point lead less than three minutes into the second quarter but let the Tigers clawed back within 35-30 in the opening minute of the second half.

Noelle Cobb then scored six points to spark a 15-4 La Verne run and Karli Kato punctuated the streak with a 3-pointer to give the Leopards a 50-34 lead.

La Verne turned a handful of Oxy turnovers into easy fast break buckets to extend the lead to as much as 24 points with 7:42 left in the game, which was more than enough to withstand a furious late rally the Tigers.

Cobb had a monster game playing off Myers, finishing with 28 points, eight rebounds and three assists. She was 12-of-16 from the field.

Shannon Irwin was all over the place, coming with steals and finishing off easy transition buckets all afternoon. She finished with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.

Erin Matsumoto led the Tigers with 18 points and Grace Baranowski had 14 points and nine rebounds.
