Baseball bounces back, cruises past Southern Vermont 10-0

LA VERNE, Calif. — After tough back-to-back lossses, the La Verne baseball team bounced back with a convincing 10-0 win over Southern Vermont on Thursday afternoon at Ben Hines Field.

La Verne's pitching staff led by Christopher Peres pitched a 3-hit shutout to lead the way. Peres got the start on the mound and struck out seven in six innings to pick up the win. Lefty Logan Frye got an out and Brennan Morales pitched 2.2 scoreless innings while fanning three to finish the game.

The teams traded goose eggs for the first 3 1/2 innings but La Verne broke through with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back. Anthony Gonzalez hit a bases-loaded single with one out to break the cap and with the bases still packed, Southern Vermont first baseman Cody Sullivan muffed a routine grounder that allowed all three runs to come home to give the Leopards a 4-0 lead.

La Verne tacked on six more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach. Christopher Arcos, who got the start in right field, hit an RBI double in the sixth and Jacob Benson followed with a two-run single up the middle to give the Leopards a seven run lead. In the seventh, with runners at the corners, Dylan Lowenstein singled to center and both runners scored after Zack Stacey misjudged the hop. Andrew Douglas then plated Lowenstein on a groundout for the final tally.

Justin Wright went 2-for-3 with two runs to spark La Verne's attack. Peres bat for himself to start the game and finished 2-for-4.

John Arancio had two hits for the Mountaineers and Stacey added a hit.

After playing five games in five days, the Leopards will take a week off before hosting Wesleyan (Conn.) for a doubleheader next Friday, March 24.
