LA VERNE, Calif. —The La Verne baseball team defeated Redlands, 4-3 and 5-3, to take the series in a double header on Saturday afternoon at Ben Hines Field.
La Verne improves to 16-14 overall and 10-5 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Redlands falls to 20-13 and 11-7.
The Leopards pitching staff came up big today as nine different pitchers toed the rubber on the game. The changes were enough to keep the Bulldogs guessing and the Leopards skated off with the series.
Justin Wright found a hole in the right side in the fifth to bring home Luke Gutierrez and Jacob Benson and tie it up at 2-2. Jakob Thomas picked up a RBI double, driving in Christopher Ligot, in the bottom of the eighth. Thomas scored on a wild pitch immediately after and Dylan Lowenstein singled to right field to bring in Brandon Vogel, putting the Leopards up 5-2. La Verne would hold off the ninth inning push from Redlands to close it out.
Redlands broke the stalemate in the third when Christopher Scalisi drove in Christian Conci, who doubled to right center. The Bulldogs went up 2-0 after Brendan Moore hit a single to drive in Scalisi.
Game 1
The Leopards bats went to work in the bottom of the fifth. Benson singled to right, Ligot advanced Benson on a sac bunt, Christopher Peres drove in Benson, and Lowenstein scored Thomas to give La Verne a 4-1 edge.
The Bulldogs responded with two more in the sixth and eighth innings, but Hayden Firth retired the final two Bulldogs to pick up the save and end the comeback.
Peres picked up his fifth win on the mound, allowing one run in four innings while striking out four.
