Leopards Split At Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, CA — The Leopards got their bats going late in game one to score a come from behind win but it was the Sagehens with the late-game offense to pull away with a game two win as the University of La Verne baseball team and Pomona-Pitzer split in their Saturday doubleheader.

Season Impact

After Saturday's results, the Leopards move to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer now stands at 6-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Game One: La Verne 5, Pomona-Pitzer 4

The Leopards rallied for three runs in the seventh to tie the game 4-4 and Christian Killian game through with what proved to be the game-winning RBI in the ninth to score a game one win for La Verne.

Adam Santa Cruz got the offense rolling in the third when he hit a solo shot over the left field fence. Patrick Keller stepped up next and drew a walk and then swiped second base to get into scoring position. John Bike took advantage and singled up the middle to bring in Keller.

Tanner Browning evened the game later in the inning when he stepped in to pinch-hit and came through with an RBI single to left to score Brandon Shiota.

In the ninth, Keller continued to show off how dangerous he can be once he gets on base. The junior again stole second to get into scoring position and the move proved crucial. Bike came up to bat next, singled up the middle, and moved Keller 90 feet from home. Killian followed up with a single up the middle to score the difference-maker.

Killian led the Leopards with three hits and a walk. Keller scored three times to go with two hits and a walk. Bike added two hits and a walk.

Devon Burhans pitched five innings of relief, struck out five, and had zero walks to pick up the win. Cody Norman struck out four batters in his start.

Tyler Lawson stepped onto the mound for the final two outs and struck out one to pick up the save.

The Sagehens were led by David Bedrosian three hits and one RBI.

Game Two: Pomona-Pitzer 8 La Verne 2

The Leopards jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead but couldn't get any more runners across the plate in game two.

It was Keller again providing the offense with an RBI double that scored Santa Cruz and then racing home from third on a past ball later in the inning.

The Sagehens responded with a three-run second inning to take the lead for good.

Next Game: The Leopards close out the weekend against Centenary at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
