Baseball Rallies Late to Complete Sweep

LA VERNE, CA — The Univesity of La Verne baseball team caught fire late to complete the comeback against Whitman and secure the three-game sweep.

Game Two: La Verne 7, Whitman 5

The Leopard overcame a 5-0 deficit to score a two-run in the final game against the blues.

Tanner Siffert led the offensive surge, going 3-3 at the plate with three RBIs, two runs, two walks, one triple, and one double. The sophomore gave the Leopards their first lead of the game in the eighth inning when he doubled in Patrick Keller to put La Verne up 6-5. Siffert got the Leopards on the board in the fifth inning with an RBI single and his RBI triple in the seventh sparked a three-run inning for the Leopards to tie the game.

Matthew Dodd carried the load for the Leopards on the mound. In just the second pitching appearance of his career, the freshman went five and two-thirds innings with eight strikeouts to earn the win.

Catcher Adam Santa Cruz added two RBIs in the win. The senior brought in Siffert in the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth when he again plated Siffert, this time with a single through the left side.

Keller finished the game with two hits, two runs, two walks, and a stolen base. Christian Killian and Jacob Benson each added an RBI. Chase Siffert, Aaron Fong, and Brandon Shiota each scored a run. Travis Moffat picked up the save.

Game One: La Verne 4, Whitman 3

The Leopards scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead and held on the rest of the way to win Saturday's opener.

Devon Burhans grinded out a win for La Verne. After the Blues took a 3-1 win after the first two innings, the senior locked down the visitors for the rest of his outing. Burhans went seven innings, giving up just five hits and one earned run, and struck out one batter. Moffatt stepped onto the mound in the ninth and struck out two batters to earn the save.

Trailing 3-1 in the third, Shiota stepped up to the plate and doubled to right center sending Tanner Siffert and Keller charging home to tie the game.

After Shiota moved over 90 feet on a Killian flyout, Jacob Benson singled through the right side to bring in what proved to be the winning run.

Next Game

The Leopards will next host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Thursday, March 12 at 3 p.m. in a nonconference game. The game against the Stags was a late addition to the Leopards' scheduled following the cancellation of La Verne's matchup against Ithaca.
