La Verne, CA – The Leopards hosted the University of Rochester in doubleheader action Saturday, winning game one 7-2 and losing game two 8-7. The Rochester Yellowjackets finished last season ranked nationally in Division 3 baseball and improved to 7-4 overall.
Game One
Jerry Terry owned the Yellowjackets' hitters in game one, finishing eight dominant innings in his second double-digit strikeout performance this year. Terry carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and earned his SCIAC-leading fourth win.
The Leopards' lineup managed to get the leadoff runner on base in every inning, starting the scoring early with two runs in the first and another in the second. They collected ten hits including a trio of Leos with two hits: Anthony Salcedo, Luke Garcia and Logan Reese. Reese led the team with three RBIs.
Game Two
La Verne had the potential game-winning run on base in the bottom of the ninth but could not surmount an early Rochester lead, despite scoring three in the final frame.
Reese was part of another two-hit trio, with first-year teammates Nate Perry and Ryan Vosika collecting a pair themselves. Perry and Reese both tripled, singled, as well as drove in a run; Vosika doubled and also drove a runner home.
Seven pitchers were used by head coach Scott Winterburn, taking advantage of the day off in the middle of the series to have multiple arms make their second appearances. Benny Vogel, the SCIAC leader in saves, suffered his first loss.
The Leopards move to 9-7 overall, their record in non-conference games becomes 4-6. They will have a chance to improve in those games with six at home scheduled over the next two weeks, beginning with Endicott College on Mar. 16 at 3 p.m.
