Led by a strong shooting effort from Trevor Woodland, the University of La Verne cruised to an 87-75 triumph over West Coast Baptist College Monday night in Lancaster.
La Verne (2-1) shot 56.3% (36-64) from the field including a 9-of-21 effort from three-point range in the victory.
The Leopards raced out to a 48-31 advantage at the half, connecting on 20 of their 35 field goal attempts. The Leos also connected on 6 of their 12 shots from beyond the arc through the first 20 minutes of action. By contrast, West Coast Baptist was held to 10-of-31 shooting (32.3%) in the first half.
La Verne continued its momentum through the opening of the second half, building its largest lead of the game at 23 points to seizing a 59-36 lead. The Leos made 55.2% of their field goal attempts in the second frame.
Woodland tallied 25 points in the win for the Leopards, making seven of his 13 three-point field goal attempts for the game. Austin Napolitano added 14 points and 6 rebounds while Jonathan Bastos collected 12 points and 7 boards. Sam Adams pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds.
The Leopards return home to face Pacifica College Friday night at Frantz Athletic Court in a 7:30 pm tip-off.
