Leos Face CMS In SCIAC Semifinals

The University of La Verne men's basketball team will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the SCIAC Postseason Semifinal round Friday at 7:30 pm at Ducey Gymnasium in Claremont.  The other semifinal pits #4 seed Cal Lutheran (13-12) at #1 seed Redlands (14-11).  The semifinal winners will meet for the tournament championship Saturday at 7:30 pm on the floor of the highest remaining seed.

ROAD TO POSTSEASON: CMS finished the season with an 11-3 conference mark to earn a share of the SCIAC Championship with Redlands, and is the #2 seed.  CMS (15-9) has won or shared the SCIAC title in each of the last three seasons.  La Verne (13-12) finished 8-6 in league play to finish in a tie for third place to earn the #3 seed.  The Leopards are making their first appearance in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:  Leopard guard Trevor Woodland (13.4 points per game) and forward Austin Napolitano (12.3) both averaged in double figures in 2010-11.  Center Alex Wolpe led the SCIAC in field goal percentage, connecting on 64.0% of his attempts this season.  For CMS, center Patrick Lacey averaged a team-best 11.3 points per game.  Sophomore guard Cody Mivshek averaged 9.0 points per contest while forward Joseph Anderson led the Stags in field goal percentage at 60.2%.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: La Verne dropped both of its regular season contests to CMS, falling 68-55 at home on January 26 prior to suffering a 56-48 setback to the Stags on February 12 in Claremont.  Lacey led CMS with 14 points and Trevor Woodland led La Verne with 16.  CMS scored 48 second-half points, shooting 62% from the field to pull away from the Leos.  In the second game, Mivshek led CMS with 15 points with the Leopards' Tyler Hoyt leading La Verne with 11 points.  CMS used a balanced attack (nine players scored), a big free throw discrepancy (+18) and held Woodland to only two points to pull out the win

ADMISSION:  Only the main lobby entrances will be open to fans attending the games. As this is a conference playoff event, admission will be charged as follows:

·         All SCIAC faculty, staff and students are free with proper ID.

·         Children 12 years of age and under are FREE

·         General Admission of $5.00 is charged for all others.

·         No complimentary lists for team members, parents, etc.

SEATING: CMS fans will sit on the west side bleachers and the half of the east side behind the CMS team bench; La Verne fans will sit in the half of the east side bleachers behind the ULV team bench and in the balcony seating area.  At some point admission may be closed as all seats and available standing area will be filled. Those turned away are welcome to return at halftime, and will be admitted if space is available.
