La Verne Drops Home Opener To Poets

The University of La Verne men's tennis team hosted their first conference game of the 2009 season against the Whittier Poets, but dropped the match in an 8-1 final Friday afternoon at the Claremont Club.

Leopards Richie Delgado and Alex Muresan played some exciting tennis against Justin Delong and Sean Robertson, and had the set at 6-7 before the Poets were able to take the last game, giving Whittier a 3-0 lead after finishing Doubles.

In Singles play, Whittier was able to sweep all but two sets. Muresan played Poet Gavin Smith, and would drop his first set 6-7, but would come back strong with a 6-3 win to tie the at a set apiece, forcing a 10-point tie-breaker. After a hard fought battle, Muresan would emerge the winner in a 10-6 final, giving La Verne its only point on the day.

La Verne will continue its 2009 season with a home match against non-conference opponents Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday, February 10. Doubles will start at 1:00pm at the Claremont Club.
