CLAREMONT, Calif. — All-American Andrew Carrasco won his signature event, the hammer throw, in his first action of 2017 at the Rossi Relays, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, on Saturday at Zinda Field.

Carrasco, who was the only underclassman to earn All-America status in the hammer at last year's NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships, missed the first few weeks of the season due to an injury. But he picked up right where he left off, winning the event with a toss of 53.92 meters (176 feet, 11 inches) on Saturday. He recorded the best throw on his first try.

The Leopards went 1-2-3 in the event as TJ Randall took second with a throw of 48.45m (158-11) and Christopher Gura finished third with a heave of 48.29m (158-05).

Gura added two more top-3 finishes. He was second in the shot put with a toss of 13.98m (45-10.50) and took third in the discus throw with a throw of 44.33m (148-05).

The Leopards had good results on the track as well. The 4x400m relay team of Trevor Welch, Terrence Robinson, Joshua Francis and Jesus Payan combined to post a time of 3:22.87 and finished fourth just behind SCIAC rival Occidental.

Joseph Azucena finished 10th overall in the 400m hurdles with a personal record time of 59.73. Anthony Carter and Eduardo Barrera finished 14th and 15th, respectively, in the 100m with times of 11.32 and 11.33.

Jacob Pavlovics finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.83m (6-00) and Andres Pulgarin was seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.11m (13-05.75). Kyle Ambat finished 10th in the long jump with a leap of 6.13m (20-01.50).

The Leopards finished third as team, behind only NCAA Division II Fresno Pacific and Cal State Los Angeles.

La Verne hosts the first SCIAC Multi-Dual meet of the season this Saturday at Ortmayer Stadium.
