Reid to lead Team USA women at Thorpe Cup

LA VERNE, Calif. — La Verne track and field head coach Kevin Reid will serve Team USA as its women's head coach at the Thorpe Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany, on July 29-30.

The Thorpe Cup is an annual international track and field competition between USA and Germany and will feature some of each nation's top athletes. Teams are composed of up to seven men and seven women who compete in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively. Athletes receive a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events in the decathlon and heptathlon. The top five men's and top three women's scores are added together to determine the overall men's and women's team winners.

The decathlon consists of the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. The heptathlon consists of the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m.

"This is a tremendous honor to represent our nation," Reid said. "I am so thankful to USATF for this opportunity to lead Team USA and look forward to helping our athletes compete against the best athletes from Germany.

"I'm also thankful to the University of La Verne for its continued support of track and field and will represent the University with pride."

Reid, who was appointed as the Leopards' head coach earlier in the month, is one of the most respected multi-events coach in the nation. He coached Bryan Clay to a gold medal in the decathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing and a silver medal at Athens 2004. He also has coached in every U.S. Olympic Team Trials since 1992 and every USA Track & Field Championships since 1990.

This will be Reid's third Thorpe Cup head coaching assignment and sixth overall. He served as the men's head coach in 2005 and 2015.
