Swimming & Diving races Redlands and Whittier

LA VERNE, Calif. — Distance swimmers shined for the University of La Verne swimming and diving teams in a multi-dual meet against Redlands and Whittier on Saturday at La Verne Aquatic Center.

Brandon Pon and Karla Fuertez each won the 1000 yard freestyle and the 500 freestyle for the men's team and the women's team, respectively, to lead the Leopards.

Pon went 10:12.62 in the 1000 and finished in 4:59.83 in the 500 while Fuertez won her 1000 in 11:14.69 and the 500 in 5:36.91.

Daniel Carpenter also notched a pair of wins in the men's competition. The junior claimed the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.65 and the 100 freestyle with a 47.47.

Timothy Polman won the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.53. Polman also came in third in the 100 butterfly at 55.11.

Harry Bennett turned in a couple of top-three finishes. He touched the wall third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.25 and finished runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.99.

On the women's side Rachel Fox and Rachel Miyoga stood out with a pair of top-five finishes each. Freshman Fox was La Verne's top finisher in the 200 freestyle and fifth overall at 2:06.63 and came in fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.29. Miyoga was fifth in the 50 freestyle (26.33) and fourth in the backstroke (1:05.31).

Miranda Chavez touched third in the 100 breaststroke at 1:12.43.

Scott MacKay was his usual self on the diving boards, winning both the 1-meter and the 3-meter. The senior scored 256.75 on the 1-meter board and posted 305.20 on the 3-meter.

In women's diving, Amber DeLoye finished third on the 3-meter (151.85) and sixth on the 1-meter (148.35).

Both men's and women's relay teams were competitive. CJ Woodward, Harry Bennett, Polman and Carpenter kicked off the swimming portion of the meet with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:39.37) and the women's team of Mary Hanna, Fox, Kayla Yip and Miyoga also finished second in the same event wit ha time of 1.56.72. Yip, Cha, Lora Marquez-Salgado and Fuertez added a third place finish in the 200 freestyle relay to close the meet.

Before the meet, the Leopards honored the careers of their seven seniors with a brief pre-meet ceremony. Elisa De Luna, Chelsea Dean, Fuertez, MacKay, Kendra New, Alexis Smith and Kaitlin Wilson were introduced by head coach Pat Skehan and were presented with gifts from the staff.

The Leopards dive back in next Saturday when they travel to Mills.
