Swimming & Diving sweep Chapman, Caltech

ORANGE, Calif. — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams swept Chapman and Caltech on Saturday at Allred Pool.

The women, whose relay miscues cost them against Chapman last weekend, avenged the loss behind big performances by freshmen and by taking both relay races. The Leopards beat the Panthers, 125-105, and defeated Caltech, 167-49.

Rachel Fox, one of the freshmen, was the only triple winner for the women. The Murrieta native won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.64 and went on to claim the 200 breaststroke at 2:33.88. She turned right around from the breaststroke and went 2:04.83 on the third leg of the winning 800 freestyle relay (8:23.60).

Kayla Yip, another freshman, won the 200 butterfly by nearly seven second (2:20.77) and swam the second leg of the 800 freestyle relay.

Karla Fuertez anchored the 800 freestyle relay team and continued her dominance in the distance events, winning the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:49.44.

Krislyn Cha won the 400 individual medley at 4:52.16 and swam the butterfly leg of the winning 400 medley relay. She added a second place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:35.86).

"Almost every single woman scored today," La Verne head coach Pat Skehan said. "That bodes very well for our future."

The men beat Chapman, 126-79, and edged out Caltech, 114-113.

Daniel Carpenter was the only triple winner on the men's side. The junior won the the 200 freestyle (1:47.30), 100 freestyle (48.07) and turned in the fastest leg of the winning 800 freestyle relay (7:21.59).

Scott MacKay gave the Leopards two more crucial wins on the diving boards, winning the 1-meter with a score of 202.70 and the 3-meter with a 251.55.

Timothy Polman won the 50 freestyle for the fourth meet in a row with a time of 21.67.

Brandon Pon shined in the distance events. The freshman won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:58.74 and set a personal mark in the mile at 17:02.73.

"Both teams have seen some solid growth since Christmas and are looking forward to some fast races next week against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps," Skehan said.

Next weekend's meet at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is the last dual meet of the season before the 2016 SCIAC Championships on Feb. 17-20 at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center.
