Leopards make history in Winter Collegiate Invite

LOS ANGELES, CA — The La Verne Swimming & Diving team took the East LA College pool for the final day of La Verne Collegiate Invite Sunday, Nov. 21.

The final swim of the weekend marked a historic day for the Leos, with multiple members shattering previous personal and school records.

For senior Jonathan Olvera, he finished the day with the best 200 Yard Butterfly in head coach Pat Skehan's tenure with the Leopards. Sophomore Asher Kocalis followed suit, reaching the finale in four events — the 500 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly, 100 Freestyle, and 200 Butterfly.

In the women's races, senior Samantha Szok found herself with the fifth-fastest mile in the last 10 years at La Verne — 19:58:67, a score eclipsing the top-30 finishers.

Sophomore Raymond Thai continued the Leopards' success, finishing the 100 and 200 Breaststroke at season bests — just missing his personal best.

Another outstanding performance came on the women's side with senior Alondra Camacho posting season bests in the 100 and 200 backstrokes as well as the 100 medley, finishing in the top 20 twice.

The Leopards will try to take this momentum into the next portion of the season, which starts in January. It kicks off with a meet at Las Flores Park against Chapman, Jan. 8.
