Howell breaks three-point record, Leos rout Bethesda

By Joe Perrino, Sports Information Assistant

LA VERNE, CA — On Friday, December 10th, the Leos steamrolled the Bethesda Flames, 116-49.

Incredibly, the score was merely an afterthought when the fans filling the stands at The Tents watched freshman Marissa Howell drain her record-breaking 12th three of the game.

With 35 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Howell took an inbound pass and tossed up what could have been her final shot. When it clanked off of the left iron, senior Jaelynn Curley grabbed it to add one more to the team's 45 other offensive rebounds on the night. Under pressure, Curley slung it back out to Howell on the left wing who did not miss a second time — hitting her 12th three-point shot and falling to the floor in 'and-one' fashion.

The previous three-point record in one game was 11 — which Howell tied Nov. 13 against SAGU American in a 106-59 win — originally set by Bailey Kurahashi on Jan. 23, 2018.

Howell hit the record-breaking three with 30 seconds to go. Finishing with 37 points, shooting 12-29 from beyond the arc, and knocking down her lone free throw, Howell capped off a historic day for Leopard women's basketball.

The Leos finished with five scorers in double figures, and 70 rebounds — 46 offensive and 24 defensive rebounds.

Curley's assist to Howell at the end of the game marked her 10th of the game — the first time a Leo has hit double digits in that column in Jason Pruitt's four seasons coaching at La Verne.

With the win, the Leopards improve to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in SCIAC. Bethesda falls to 0-17.

La Verne will take the hardwood next Monday, Dec. 13th when they host LIFE Pacific at home.
