Leopards Battle Chapman University In SCIAC Tournament Quarterfinal Action

Orange, California - The University of La Verne women's basketball team traveled to Orange, California to take on Chapman University in the SCIAC Women's Conference Basketball Tournament. The Leopards participated in Quarterfinal action of the SCIAC Tournament. This was the first time that the women's basketball program has participated in post season play in ten years. The Leopards jumped on the Panthers of Chapman early to begin the game, leading by as much as fourteen points in the first half of play. The Leopards went into halftime with a 31-25 advantage, sparked by the backcourt play of Jazzlyn Johnson and Casey Kuramoto. As second half action began it became a defensive battle as both teams turned up the intensity on the defensive end of the court. Chapman made some key plays in second half action to combat the Leopards pressure defense, and though fighting until the end, the Leopards fell to the Panthers by a final score of 54-45. Jazzlyn Johnson led the Leopards with fourteen parts and grabbing seven rebounds while both Casey Kuramoto and Jaelynn Curley added nine points apiece. Kayla Rubio led all rebounder with eleven boards for the game. The season saw the Leopards finish in the top 10 amongst the NCAA team leaders in various statistical categories. The Leopards ranked number one in the country in rebounds, rebounds per game, offensive rebounds, number six in three-point field goals attempter per game and number eight in three point field goals made per game for the 2021-2022 season.
