Rubio breaks rebound record, Leos on fire

LA VERNE — The Leopards women's basketball team beat the LIFE Pacific Warriors 81-52 Monday, Dec. 13 in The Tents, breaking yet another record in the effort.

With 25 boards, Kayla Rubio set the all-time record for rebounds in a single game. After previously tying the record (24) shared by several Leopard alumnae earlier this season — Rubio's record breaking effort against LIFE Pacific accounted for 31% of the Leos' 80 rebounds in the contest. As a team, La Verne out-rebounded the Warriors 80-52.

Adding to her rebounds, Rubio put up 10 points, securing her fourth double-double of the season.

La Verne led 11-9 with 54 seconds left in the first, until senior Jaelynn Curley knocked down a three pointer to start a Leopard run. Senior Alyssa Ono followed with another three-point play, this one the hard way — via layup and free throw. Junior Milan McGary swiped a steal the next possession and dished it off to Curley for a fast-break lay-in.

Curley's two points capped off an 8-0 run in 43 seconds for La Verne, and the Leos never looked back.

Curley finished as the game-high scorer with 23 points, shooting 7-16 from downtown. Rubio and freshman Marissa Howell were the only other Leopards in double figures, with Howell scoring 11. The rest of the squad provided buckets up and down the lineup as they contributed to the win.

With the win La Verne has won its third straight and moves to 6-3 on the season and 1-2 in SCIAC. The Warriors fall to 0-12.

The Leos will remain in the comfy confines of The Tents as they host Manchester University (IN) Sunday, Dec 19 at 2 p.m.
