LA VERNE, CA — Andrea Story connected with Alina Cobian for the opening lead of the game in the 68th minute and the University of La Verne women's soccer team looked primed to open SCIAC play with a win Wednesday night at Ortmayer Stadium.
But the Athenas scored an equalizer in the 75th minute and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Kira Favekh tapped in the game-winner in double overtime to spoil La Verne's SCIAC opener, ending the game 2-1.
Leopards' Scoring Play
With the game at a 0-0 stalemate midway through the second half, Story set up for a corner kick with a host of Leopards ready in the box. The senior sent a perfect cross to a leaping Cobian who headed the ball to the back of the net for the lead. The goal was reminiscent of Cobian's two game-winners last season.
Equalizer
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps countered with a long cross and header of their own a few minutes later to even the score at 1-1.
Overtime
With the game still knotted up at the end of regulation, the Leopards entered their second overtime game of the season. After neither team was able to get a shot off in the first overtime period or the first few minutes of the second overtime period it looked like the game would end in a tie.
But in the 105th minute, Rhiann Holman sent a ball into the box and Favakeh was able to tap it in for the difference maker.
Season Impact
La Verne is still searching for its first win of the season, dropping to 0-2-1 and 0-1 in SCIAC play. The Athenas improve to 1-1 overall 1-0 in the conference.
Next Game
The Leopards next play their first SCIAC road game of the season when they travel down Arrow Highway to play the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Saturday, September 8 at 11 a.m.
