AZUSA, Calif. — Melissa Cerrillos of the La Verne women's track and field team broke the school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific, on Thursday.

Cerrillos, who was a surprise winner in the event at last year's SCIAC championships, slashed more than 10 seconds off her pervious personal record and crossed the finish line at 11 minutes, 7.83 seconds. She finished eighth in her section and was second among NCAA Division III runners.

"It was a nice improvement for Melissa," La Verne interim coach Bryan George said. "Any time you can set a personal best in a competitive race like that you should be happy. I'm optimistic that she can get under 11 minutes in the next month and have a shot to get to NCAAs."

On Wednesday and Thursday, Dreama Gonzales competed in the hepathlon at California Invitational, also hosted by Azusa Pacific.

Gonzales set a new personal record in the javelin with a toss of 32.90 meters (107 feet, 11 inches) on the second day. She recorded a leap of 4.76m in the long jump and finished the 800 meters in 2:36.13 to round out the second day.

On Wednesday, Gonzales completed the 100m hurdles in 17.92, cleared 1.45m in the high jump, recorded a toss of 8.10m (26-07) and finished the 200m in 26.93.

The Leopards are bak in action on Saturday at the third SCIAC Multi-Dual meet at Pomona-Pitzer.
