Women’s Water Polo tops Cal Lutheran, 5-4

LA VERNE, Calif. — Hailey Westwood made 10 saves, the defense stood tall and the University of La Verne women's water polo team defeated Cal Lutheran, 5-4, on Saturday at La Verne Aquatics Center.

It is the Leopards' first win over the Regals since 2006, when La Verne won 4-3 in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

With the win, La Verne improves to 4-9 overall and 2-1 in SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran falls to 5-15 and 1-2.

La Verne took a 5-2 lead into the fourth quarter on strong field defense and some acrobatic saves from Westwood. The Regals staged a late comeback, scoring two unanswered goals in the fourth, but the Leopards held on for the win.

Megan Little opened the scoring at the 5:40 mark in the first quarter and Lora Marquez-Salgado gave the Leopards a 2-1 lead on a power play goal.

The Leopards doubled the lead to 4-2 at halftime on goals by Marquez-Salgado and Catie Tuning. Sarah Jefferis scored what turned out to be game winner in the third quarter while the Leopards shut out the Regals in the frame.

The Leopards return to action next Saturday when they travel to Chapman. First sprint is at 11 a.m.
