Pomona-Pitzer edges Women's Water Polo in OT, 8-5

LA VERNE, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer put the clamps on high-octane La Verne offense to beat the Leopards, 8-5, in overtime on Saturday at La Verne Aquatics Center.

La Verne falls to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer improves to 10-14 and 5-1.

After a tightly contested regulation, the Sagehens imposed their will in overtime as they blanked La Verne, 3-0.

The Leopards had the early edge. After giving up the game's first goal to Pomona-Pitzer, Megan Little scored two straight goals and Guarina Garcia added one to give the Leopards a 3-1 lead late in the second quarter.

But Megan Snow got one back for Pomona-Pitzer with 23 seconds left in the first half and the Sagehens shut out La Verne, 2-0, in the third quarter to grab to 4-3 lead.

Candace Vorbeck tied it up at 4-4 with a goal early in the fourth and Lora Marquez-Salgado put the Leopards up, 5-4, with 4:01 left in the game to wrestle the momentum back, but Christine Williamson scored the equalizer with 2:37 to go.

La Verne's Garcia and Stephanie Rosero, who had gone into the game with 104 combined goals on the season, were held to just one today. Rosero was held scoreless.

Before the game, the Leopards honored the careers of their four seniors Marquez-Salgado; Kendra New; Emily Randall; and Catie Tuning with a brief ceremony.

The Leopards are back in action on Wednesday at home against Redlands.
