Cross Country teams finish 8th at SCIAC Championships

CHINO HILLS, Calif. — Samuel Johnny and Melissa Cerrillos led the Leopards Saturday morning at the SCIAC Cross Country Championships.

Both teams finished eighth in the meet.

In the men's race, Johnny finished 31st overall with a time of 27:17.78. Matthew Salas was the second Leopard to finish at a time of 28:37.01. Chris Arcos crossed next at 28:56.73.

"This was the best the men have executed a race plan all season," said La Verne Cross Country Head Coach Bryan George. "The course was running slow today and the end result wasn't exactly what we wanted, but I think this was a good step and I'm expecting some nice improvements at the regional meet in a couple weeks."

Eric Lopez-Elwell (29:03.29) and Marcelo Arcos (29:06.43) rounded out the scoring for La Verne.

On the women's side, Cerrillos finished 22nd overall with a time of 24:55.39. Rachael Dela Cruz crossed second for La Verne with a time of 26:05.71. Samantha Hanawalt was the third Leopard finisher at 26:32.84.

"The women had some bright spots, but things didn't come together like we were hoping for," said George. "We'll learn from it and bounce back at regionals."

Janice Deguerio (27:57.38) and Ashley Garnica (27:59.38) rounded out the top five.
