Moronez Named SCIAC Athlete of the Week

LA VERNE, CA — Raymond Moronez has been named SCIAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced Monday.

SCIAC Release

Moronez had a big all-around game for the University of La Verne as the Leopards nearly pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback against Cal Lutheran. Moronez scored the first points of the game for La Verne when Torii Hilbert blocked the Kingsmen's PAT attempt. Moronez scooped up the ball and took it to the house for the defensive PAT.

Moronez also picked off Cal Lutheran quarterback Hector Gonzalez late in the second quarter, his third interception in two games, and finished with 11 tackles.

The Charter Oak High School product is the fourth Leopard to earn SCIAC Football Athlete of the Week honors this season. Robert Franklin picked up defensive honors after La Verne's homecoming win against Whittier College, Nathaniel Sagastume earned offensive honors after scoring the winning touchdown against 2018 SCIAC Champions Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and Arturo Herrera-Caballero won back-to-back specialist honors after his performances against Willamette and then No. 11 Whitworth.

Moronez leads the Leopards onto the field before taking on the Kingsmen.

Next Game

The Leopards conclude the 2019 season this Saturday when they host undefeated No. 13 Chapman at 1 p.m. The Panthers secured at least a share 2019 SCIAC Championship and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs with their win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps last Saturday.

La Verne will celebrate its seniors in a brief pregame ceremony.
