LA VERNE, CA — The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has named Raymond Moronez SCIAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second straight week.
Moronez ended the season on a high note, totaling three interceptions and four tackles against No. 13 Chapman. He grabbed his first pick on the Panthers' first possession of the game when he jumped in front of Jonston MacIntyre's pass just outside the Leopards' red zone, and he then picked off Reed Vettel early in the second quarter. On Chapman's opening possession of the fourth quarter, he added his third interception when he snagged MacIntyre's pass at La Verne's three-yard line and just managed to stay inbounds.
Moronez had an outstanding finish to the season, ending with six interceptions in the final three games. His six interceptions rank Moronez as the second most in the SCIAC and tie him for fifth nationally. He earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors last week when he scored a defensive PAT and picked off a pass against Cal Lutheran.
The Leopards earned SCIAC Football Athlete of the Week honors six times this season. Along with Moronez's two recognitions, Robert Franklin picked up defensive honors after La Verne's homecoming win against Whittier College, Nathaniel Sagastume earned offensive honors after scoring the winning touchdown against 2018 SCIAC Champions Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and Arturo Herrera-Caballero won back-to-back specialist honors after his performances against Willamette and then No. 11 Whitworth.
