Track and Field Opens Season at CMS

CLAREMONT, CA — The University of La Verne men's and women's track and field teams got the 2020 season started at the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Outdoor Indoor Distance Challenge Meet.

The meet was contested outdoors at the Burns Track and Field Complex but was set up with an indoor track and field format. 

"It was a good opening weekend for the Leo track and field teams," said La Verne track and field Head Coach Kevin Reid. "We had solid efforts in the meet with no less than nine PR's and a school-record in 60-meter high hurdles on the men's side and nine PR's on the women's side. It sets up both teams with momentum going into next week's indoor opener in Arizona."

Men's Recap

Zachary Reid led the Leopards with a program record in the 60-meter high hurdles, setting the next best at 8.73.

The Leopards finished 1-2 in the one mile led by junior Matthew Salas (4:32.28) and followed by freshman Alexander Medina (4:34.99). Aiden Garcia took fourth at 4:41.11.

Anthony Carter won the long jump with a distance of 21'0.5" and Theo Luu picked up a win in the triple jump with a mark of 37'6.5".

In the throwing events, Matthew Pedroza won the shot put with a distance of 44'4".

Patrick Cornwell added a second-place finish in the 400 meters finishing at 51.36. Terrance Robinson took third in the 200 meters (22.91) and fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.16).

Women's Recap

Returning NCAA qualifier Jade Griffin led La Verne with a pair of wins. She took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.92 and posted a winning time of 25.50 in the 200 meters.

The Leopards swept the top-three spots in the one-mile run with Bianca Pages (5:38.53), Catherina Makinna Posada (5:49.02), and Isabella Powers (6:02.31) claiming the top-three spots.

Angie Steele added a win in the high jump with a final height of 4'11". Vera Juncaj took third in the event at 4'9".

Next Meet

The Leopards travel to Flagstaff, Arizona to compete at the Mountain T Invitational held at Northern Arizona University held next Friday and Saturday.
