REDLANDS, CA — A year unlike any other continued on Friday as the University of La Verne men's and women's track and field teams competed at the SCIAC Championships. For the Leopards, the championship meet would also serve as their season debut.

Subdue Ezinwa led La Verne at the meet, winning his first SCIAC Championship. The veteran took the top spot in the discus with a winning throw of 134'0" (40.84m) beating out the closest competitor by four inches. Ezinwa added another top-two finish later in the day when he took second in the shot put with a throw of 41' 3¼" (12.58m)

The Leopards posted another top-two finish in the throwing events with Dominic Flores' second place finish in the javelin. The sophomore posted a final mark of 131'1" (39.96m) to secure his podium spot.

Zachary Reid looked sharp in his return to the track, securing a second place finish in the 110m high hurdles. The sophomore, who already owns the La Verne record in the indoor 60m indoor hurdles, posted a time of 15.66.

In the distance events, the Leopards were led by Michael Sahagun's second place finish in the 3000m steeplechase. The freshman finished with a time of 10:04.05 in his debut meet.

On the women's side, sophomore Olivia Magby led the way with a podium finish in the high jump. Magby took second in the event with a leap of 4'9¾" (1.47m). The height tied that of Cal Lutheran's Sarah Bjornson who won the event for making the mark in fewer attempts.

Freshman Rebecca Lee finished fifth in the 1500m with a time of 6:01. Andrea Camacho just missed the podium in the 800m taking fourth with a time of 2:48.08. Serena Gallegos followed behind in fifth place at 2:52.08.

Devin Spreeman added a fourth place finish in the pole vault with a height of 2.60m. Ivan Estrada earned fifth place finish in the 200m dash coming in at 23.38. Kenny Davis took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.03m.

This year's SCIAC Championships looked different than in any other season with just four universities competing. Along with La Verne, Cal Lutheran, Chapman, and host Redlands took part in the competition. Due to the limited field, only the champion in each event earned All-SCIAC honors as opposed to the top-three finishers in previous seasons.

Redlands won both the men's and women's team championships. The La Verne squads both placed fourth.

Next Meet

The Leopards return to action next week when they travel to Azusa Pacific to compete at the APU Last Chance meet. Competition on Friday begins at 9 a.m. and Saturday's events begin at 12:30 p.m.
